James and the Giant Peach
By: Roald Dahl
This is a fourth grade book club that I used for one grading period (9weeks). We met everyday for about 45 minutes Monday through Friday. However we did not just read James and the Giant Peach, we did an author study, Roald Dahl, and we extended our study to other types of research. We researched famous Problem Solvers, we researched famous buildings, and the students made scenes depicting the important events from the book. This book club was started to help classroom teachers work with students struggling in reading during their Reading period, while the students who were advanced readers came to the book club during their Reading period, but it can easily be used as an after school book club or a lunch book club. The Roald Dahl website has lesson plans and many great ideas that you can use. It also allows for the students to explore and play games to get to know the author and his many books. The Cricket in Times Square
By: George Selden
This is an after school book club for 3rd grade that I do at the end of every school year. We meet once a week for 4 sessions. Students are given a bookmark with the chapters listed that need to be read prior to each meeting. during the second meeting we research crickets and New York City. During the third meeting we research pagodas and make a cricket pagodas. I then order live crickets from Region 20 for their pagodas. The students take their pagodas home and bring them back for the last meeting where we release the crickets and enjoy a Chinese dinner party with their family while watching the movie. |

Out of My Mind
By: Sharon Draper
This is an after school book club for 4th and 5th grade. I purchased 25 copies of the book to be used during the book club but many of the students bought their own copies as well. I usually partnered with one of our counselors for this book club as well as our ALE teacher to help explain some of their devices used in the classroom. This book club really brought an awareness to our students of the variety of disabilities on our campus. |
